Padel Clubs
To give this some context, just to paint a little picture of how popular Padel is in Spain, there are more Padel courts and padel players in spain than there are tennis courts and tennis players. And you would be right in thinking of Spain as a major tennis playing nation. It’s the second most popular sport in spain behind football with over 20,000 padel courts and around 4 million active players
The LTA, now the governing body of Padel in the UK, hopes to see the growth of padel in 2023 rising to 400 courts In 2023. To achieve that the number of Padel courts in the UK needs to more than double the growth in one year, by 156%, than it has done since the first court was installed in the UK in 1997.
There are some growth stats available from the LTA, pre pandemic in 2019 there were about 6,000 active padel players in the UK and 115 padel courts.
The last active player data count in November 2021 captured around 89,000 active padel players across the UK.
But with the latest global stats showing there are about 10million players worldwide, the UK is so far behind the curve, it’s basically the fastest growing sport that most people have not heard of.
Why? Well the Brits generally enjoy playing games that they invented, and whilst there is no doubt that Padel is a form of games played on British cruise liners in the early 20th century, we have been squash and tennis obsessed, and there has been little room until recently for what was seen by tennis purists as secondary.
